The title of the painting is taken from the song title "Save the Last Dance for Me" . The song is by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. It first recorded in 1960 by Ben E. King and The Drifters, who took it to #1 on the U.S. pop charts, the group's only #1 record.

The narrative of the song is that, Doc Pomus tells his she is wife free to mingle all evening but to make sure she saves him the last dance.
Doc Pomus, had polio and used crutches to get around and could not dance, where as his wife was a Broadway dancer and actress.

In the painting narrative, things are taken a step farther. The ladies husband has died and she is left on her own, and we see the scene where they have the 'final dance' by being reunited after death.
