I've got a book full of interviews with some old miners in South Yorkshire talking about their lives down the pit. Its a really good read and there is a CD to go with it aswell. Ill get the exact title and post it here sometime.

There was one story in particular that I liked. Before the war, (Im assuming WW2) there was a miners strike and no-one had any money to buy food.Your Granny would take your granddads clothes to the shop to try and sell them.

There was this one very clever man who had an allotment on top of the crags in Barnsley.
He got together with a few friends and started digging down until they had dug a shaft about 20 ft deep.

They were able to climb down, lower a bucket an fill it with coal.
A nice little earner in times of hardship. What a genius.
